The Grungust is a fictional robot in the Super Robot Taisen series. It has appeared as a playable unit in Super Robot Taisen 4, Super Robot Taisen F, Super Robot Taisen F Final, the Super Robot Taisen Alpha series and the Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation series. The unit will also reappear in Super Robot Wars V in its "Classic series" form.

AppearanceEdit

The Grungust series have a similar outlook overall. Being super robot, they are somewhat bulky with thick armor and are significantly larger in proportion to Personal Troopers. The body parts generally look very thick with simplistic, cartoon-like body lines. The color schemes of the Grungusts vary, but are usually portrayed in a garish red, blue, and yellow tri-color paintjob. Another distinctive feature is the large jet turbines mounted on the robot's shoulders.

Technical And HistoricalEdit

The original Grungust unit in Super Robot Wars 4, Super Robot Wars F and Super Robot Wars F Final was one of two upgraded machines your original characters could obtain late in the game. As the series developed further, the Grungust series was given a more detailed background, and more variations of the design were introduced.

OriginEdit

In the Original Generation universe, a prototype to the Grungust series is developed first: the SRG-00 Grungust Type-0 (Grungust Reishiki). Lacking the transformation features of later units, this unit was fairly basic and gave the concept that Telsa Leicht Institute were attempting to accomplish. Its generator is taken from an Earth Federation Army space battleship, and in order to accommodate its massive size, the Grungust itself was made with a heavy, tall body, covered with thick armor.

As the first true super robot, it eschews the conventional weapons of Mao Industries' Gespenst series and Isurugi Industries' Lion series instead, focusing on melee combat -- its main weapons being a powerful rocket-propelled Boost Knuckle and a chest-mounted energy weapon, the Hyper Blaster. In addition, by request of its pilot, Sanger Zonvolt, a third weapon was created by Tesla Leicht's Rishu Togo: a Zankantou which could sink a battleship on its own. The Type-0 did not appear in Original Generation 2 (though it was mentioned), however, it re-appeared in the bonus segment of Original Generations, now piloted by Sanger's master, Rishu Togo.

Divine CrusadeEdit

Completed sometime later, just in time to assist the Hagane in its Earth offensive against the Divine Crusaders, the SRG-01 Grungust itself was an exceptional unit. Using the Type-0 as a base, it adds to its offensive capabilities by creating two vehicular modes for added mobility: Wing Gust (an aerial unit) and Gust Lander (a tank unit). In addition, the Grungust makes use of another specially-designed sword, the Keitou Ragouken.

Instead of utilizing a standard Personal Trooper cockpit, the Grungust uses a brain wave controller to compensate for the unit's heavy weight and sluggish controls, and a voice activated command system for activating attacks. Delivered to the Hagane by Tesla Leicht's Jonathan Kazahara, his son, Irmgult Kazahara, would utilize this weapon. In Super Robot Wars Alpha, Irm would use a modified version of the original Grungust, the SRG-01C Grungust Kai. This unit was the original Grungust with better armor, a Tronium Engine to power it, and the Gravicon System (utilized in the Huckebein MK II), which allowed it to fly. Because of the Tronium Engine, the transformation abilities have been removed as redundant. In the Original Generation continuity, the Kai retains both its original colors and transformations, and adds the "Round Wing", an expansion that adds additional wings and control surfaces for flight, as well as a missile launcher and a pair of beam cannons to increase overall firepower.

In the anime Super Robot Taisen OG: Divine Wars, Brooklyn "Bullet" Luckfield is given the SRG-01-2 Grungust Type-1 Unit 2, which differs from the Unit 1 piloted by Irm in its head design(being lion-like instead of the usual star-shape) and color(Bullet's Unit 2 is red instead of blue).

UpgradeEdit

The SRG-02 Grungust Type-2 (Grungust Nishiki) is the successor to the original Grungust, also created by Tesla Leicht near the tail end of the war with the Divine Crusaders. In battle, it is roughly equivalent to the first Grungust, however, its armor seems to be lighter in order to lower production costs. In addition, the transformation abilities have been limited so that it can only transform into the flying G-Hawk, though it has also been modified using new technology so that the transforming sequence can occur twice as fast.

This unit uses Extra-Over Technology, alien technology recovered from Meteor-3's crash site. It also utilizes a T-Link System for Psychodrivers to use. In the Alpha games, the player's chosen main characters gain this unit after it suddenly crashes into their school (which later actually turns out to be something that was planned, since they are promising Psychodrivers).

During Alpha, according to Kusuha Mizuha's storyline, after the Chōkijin join you, they absorb the Grungust Type-2 into their being to repair themselves, before combining to form the RyuKoOh and KoRyuOh. In the Original Generation games, Kusuha would receive the Grungust Type-2 to pilot on her own. Here, the Type-2 was a testbed for a possible series of mass produced mecha, thought to replace the Earth Federation Army's units.

Mass ProductionEdit

Later on, a mass produced version of the Grungust Nishiki would be created - the RSR-02 Grungust Nishiki-M. This unit is slightly weaker than the original and has completely omitted the transformation abilities. It still has high production costs, however, and therefore, only a few of these were made.

Created sometime after the L-5 Campaign, the war with the Aerogaters, the SRG-03 Grungust Type-3 (Grungust Sanshiki) is a very powerful machine with exceptionally higher output, armor, and attack power compared to its predecessors (while being larger than any other Grungust unit). This unit is a two-seater with the ability to divide into the G-Raptor (for aerial combat) and the G-Bison (a tank for land combat).

In the Alpha series, two were created: the first was destroyed during its creation, and the parts were incorporated into RyuKoOh and KoRyuOh. The second Grungust Type-3 unit would be sent to the Earth Cradle for Sanger Zonvolt's use. Sophia Nate would develop the Colossal Blade for him. In Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden, in the bleak future, the Grungust Type-3 would be infected by Machine Cells to become the Thrudgelmir.

In Super Robot Wars Alpha 2, after the Earth Cradle is attacked, Sanger sorties in the Type-3 and does battle with it. Sanger would use this until it is heavily damaged in combat. He switches to the Dygenguard, but keeps the Type-3's Colossal Blade as its main weapon.

In Original Generation 2, three Grungust Type-3 units were developed. Sanger received the second one and similar events to the Alpha series occurred with him. The first unit was utilized by Brooklyn Luckfield and Kusuha. After their encounter with the Chōkijin in Original Generation 2, the Grungust Type-3 would be absorbed by them to repair them (rather than how the Type-2 was in Alpha).

It is said the Type-3's Boost Knuckle became KoRyuOh's Tiger Knuckle and the drills mounted on its back became KoRyuOh's Variable Drill. After the war in Original Generation 2 ends, the Chōkijin are sealed in the Tesla Leicht Institute to prevent it from being appropriated by the Earth Federation Army, and the third Grungust Type-3 unit is handed to Bullet.

It is equipped with the Shishioh Blade, a mecha-sized katana designed by Rishu Togo to be used exclusively for Bullet. The first and third Type-3 units are also equipped with T-Link Systems for Psychodriver use. In order to further differentiate it from Bullet's Unit 1, the anime Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector gave Sanger's Type-3 Unit 2 a distinctive black paint scheme, vaguely reminescent of his old Type-0.

  • Final Beam
This is a powerful heated blaster weapon fired from the chest.  While the Grungust Kai in Alpha has the same weapon as the original Grungust, in 2nd Original Generations it is upgraded into Ultimate Beam, wherein the triangular portion of the Grungust Kai's chestplate flips forward as two pylons on either side of its chest do the same, forming a trio of beam cannons to create a much larger and stronger blast than the original.
  • Keitou Ragouken
In Alpha, the Grungust Kai summons a sword identical to the Type-2's Keitou Shungokuken, though it's still called Keitou Ragouken, to deliver a slash attack against the opponent.
  • Keitou Ragouken: Ankensatsu
In 2nd Original Generations, the Grungust Kai deploys the 'Keito Ragouken' from behind its right shoulder and performs the same Ankensatsu as the original Grungust.  With the additional power of the custom parts, this attack can be used with the same ease and frequency that the original Grungust would have used the basic 'Keito Ragouken'.
  • Keitou Ragouken: Goousatsu
In 2nd Original Generations, the Grungust Kai launches the Keito Ragouken into the air, where it lands at the machine's feet.  Boosting high into the air with its back to a solar eclipse, the Grungust delivers a mighty downward slash onto the opponent followed by an upward slice to form a V shape.  Jumping past the opponent with this second attack, the Grungust lands past them as they explode.

While airborne, Reishiki makes a complete stop while swinging its blade in a circular motion, followed by an overhead blade-draw. The kanji "零式斬艦刀 疾風怒濤" appear with a slight pause. After that, Reishiki initiates a diagonal diving charge, accompanied with Type-0 Zankantou's boosters flaring up as it dives. A hard, head blow strikes the enemy, and Reishiki ends it with a "twist-and-cut", causing the ground to break around it. The camera shows Reishiki's face with eyes glowing as the target explodes behind it. This attack is exclusive for the 2nd Super Robot Taisen Original Generations game.
